For a magazine such as MFN, which reports about related news from around the world, it is very important to establish and maintain good relationships with industries, universities, various organizations and publications in all economically-relevant countries. Without this intense networking, it probably would not be possible to have access to enough print-worthy information. Therefore MFN is always trying to improve its networking resources in order to provide even better service to its readers.

FEMS, the Federation of European Materials Societies, is a network for European materials scientists and engineers. It combines 24 European societies from 22 different countries and over 20,000 materials scientists and engineers. FEMS also organizes the EUROMAT conferences which are held every two years. The most recent one took place in Nuremberg in September 2007 and attracted around 2000 participants.

MFN has been impressed by the objectives and the spirit of this organization for many years and finally approached its Secretary, Paul McIntyre. We were very pleased to have the chance to interview Paul for the MFN January 2008 issue. During the interview, it was found that there are a lot of synergies from which FEMS and MFN could benefit. It became obvious that the Federation of European Materials Societies and MFN both have an international approach to their activities and that both organizations saw an advantage to be had from an improved global network.

On the 12th of January 2008, Paul McIntyre agreed, on behalf of the FEMS committee, that MFN can become the official sponsor of FEMS. With this new responsibility, MFN will offer its platform to promote the different activities of this non-profit organization. Starting with the forthcoming March issue of MFN, FEMS will have its own column to address its readers worldwide (see also page 48). In addition, MFN will encourage talented materials scientists and engineers among FEMS members to contribute their know-how not only to MFN publications, but also to the fast-growing segment of process training. This new form of cooperation is an important step towards maximizing interaction between scientists and industries and will certainly prove to be a mutually-beneficial relationship.
