Flap Peening Training at Aeronautical Accessories

Official MFN Trainer Raymond Fontana carried out a flap peening at Aeronautical Accessories in Bristol, Tennessee. This company is part of Bell Helicopter and manufactures many different parts for helicopters. One of the components that they fabricate is skid gears. In the process of manufacturing, the parts of the skid gear need to be shot peened before it can be assembled and painted. Any imperfection means a piece needs to be repeened. This process can save them lots of money and time by quickly and properly repairing imperfections.

The class was very informative. Mr. Fontana’s background in aviation and engineering was exceptionally helpful as he taught the class. The training consisted of a few hours of lecture to get familiar with the process and how to reference technical materials. The rest of the time consisted of hands on practice. An air driven and electric driven tool was used for this practice. The class participants learned how to constantly reproduce this process to mill spec standards. They also had a chance to send out repairs done with this process to be inspected. It was found that repairs were done to the same standard and better of their shot peening process.
