Gary Slavin

Gary Slavin

MFN’s education division is always looking for new talents in order to provide the best possible training to students. Since workshops in 8 different languages are offered around the globe, MFN has recruited a network of nearly forty trainers. The organisation is very pleased to welcome Gary Slavin to the team, who has outstanding references. He will be responsible for the practical shot peening training taking place at ARTC in Singapore.

Gary is originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, and graduated with a Master’s degree in Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Leeds University in 2010. Whilst studying, he completed summer internships with Rolls-Royce Plc. and built his experience in the aerospace industry by working at various sites in the UK.

After graduation, Gary joined Rolls-Royce’s Engineering Leadership Graduate Development Scheme, and extended his experience in the company, working at sites in the UK and abroad.

In 2012, Gary took on a role as a Manufacturing Engineer with Rolls-Royce in the North-East of England, where he developed his knowledge and skills in shot peening.  During that time, Rolls-Royce had been outsourcing the process of shot peening and aimed to develop in-house capabilities in this area.  When the first shot peening machine of its kind was installed in a development facility, Gary assumed the responsibility of managing the development, which included project planning and execution, budget and cost control, machine and robot programming, and completing method development activities on several complex machine parts. He was also responsible for the transfer of methods to Rolls-Royce’s new production site in Washington, Tyne & Wear. This involved working with the machine supplier to enhance the machines capability prior to the setup of the Washington shot peen cell, cell layout planning and method transfer validation. Gary was also a Rolls-Royce authorised trainer to train new team members.

In January 2016, Gary joined the Advanced Remanufacturing & Technology Centre (ARTC) in Singapore as a Senior Research Engineer. He currently manages a team in the delivery of research and development initiatives and projects relating to shot peening, and works with member companies and suppliers in the aerospace market. He also focusses on customer projects, and works with his team to develop strategies which apply Industry 4.0 (Future of Manufacturing) to shot peening, a key research and development area at ARTC. Gary is keen to expand his team to help companies make improvements and implement progressive step changes to their current shot peening process to enable them to remain competitive in the market.

Gary is always enthusiastic to learn and achieve new things. In his spare time he enjoys travelling, various sports and spending time with friends and family.
