Revolutionizing Blasting Processes: How Ceramic Blasting Media Delivers Superior Performance and Cost Savings
Will Bai, Engineer at Jiangsu Henglihong Technology Co., Ltd.

Will Bai, Engineer at Jiangsu Henglihong Technology Co., Ltd.

MFN managed to secure an interview with Will Bai, an engineer at Jiangsu Henglihong Technology Co., Ltd.

(?) MFN: Thank you for taking the time for this interview, Will. We are excited to discuss this fascinating topic today. We know that in the surface treatment process of shot blasting, various types of blasting media are used. To start with, can you tell us a little more about the core advantages of ceramic blasting media in this field?

(!) W. B.: I am pleased to introduce our ceramic blasting media to you. Currently, ceramic blasting media have become the new favorite in surface treatment processes due to their outstanding advantages in precision, durability, and environmental benefits.

(?) MFN: That sounds promising. Can you elaborate on the typical applications of ceramic blasting media and the industries in which they are used?

(!) W. B.: Of course. Ceramic blasting media are widely applied across multiple industries.

  • Aerospace Industry: They are commonly used to remove burrs from lightweight alloys, clean turbine components, and pre-treat surface coatings to ensure that components meet strict safety standards.
  • Automotive Industry: They play a crucial role in sandblasting reinforcement, improving surface integrity and extending the lifespan of key components such as engine parts and gears.
  • Consumer Electronics & Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing): Compared to traditional blasting media, ceramic blasting media offer innovative solutions in these sectors, enhancing product aesthetics and quality.

(?) MFN: You just mentioned that, compared to traditional blasting media, ceramic blasting media are more widely used. What makes ceramic abrasive materials unique in this regard?

(!) W. B.: To illustrate the excellent surface treatment capabilities of ceramic blasting media, I have compiled some key data for clarity.

  • In performance tests we conducted, it was found that the surface roughness (Ra) of titanium alloys can be maintained within the range of 0.8–1.0 μm during cleaning.
  • In the shot peening treatment of aluminum alloys, ceramic blasting media can increase residual stress by 20% or more, significantly improving fatigue resistance.
  • Unlike steel shot, the spherical shape of ceramic blasting media ensures a more uniform stress distribution and a more consistent surface finish.
  • Compared to glass beads, ceramic blasting media exhibit smaller surface roughness deviations, reducing tolerance from ±0.05 μm to ±0.01 μm. This improvement has increased the yield from 92% to 98%.

(?) MFN: With the growing emphasis on sustainability in global manufacturing, how does ceramic blasting media contribute to energy efficiency and environmental protection?

(!) W. B.: We have been tracking and compiling relevant data on the use of ceramic blasting media. For example, after a car manufacturing company switched to ceramic blasting media:

  • Annual sandblasting media consumption decreased from 12 tons to just 4 tons.
  • Dust levels were reduced from 2.5 mg/m³ to 1.1 mg/m³.
  • Cleaning efficiency improved by 15%, while throughput increased from 50 to 58 parts per hour.
  • Maintenance intervals for dust extraction systems were extended by 30%, saving approximately $20,000 annually in maintenance costs.
  • These data highlight the dual benefits of sustainability and cost-effectiveness of ceramic blasting media. Additionally, compared to traditional abrasives, its production process reduces carbon emissions by 30%, helping manufacturers not only cut operating costs but also comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

(?) MFN: As a leading supplier of ceramic blasting media, how does Henglihong ensure product quality and provide tailored solutions for its clients?

(!) W. B.: We are committed to delivering high-quality surface treatment solutions. Through advanced production processes and rigorous quality control measures, we ensure that every particle of ceramic blasting media meets international standards.

Moreover, we provide customized solutions tailored to our clients’ unique requirements, including:
