Raising the Bar: How One Glass Bead Manufacturer Transformed Their Quality Control

Glass Bead Results with Rotary Spiral
When it comes to road striping, the performance of pavement markings depends heavily on one thing: the quality of the glass beads embedded in them. Beads that are not sufficiently round scatter light poorly, embed unevenly, and fail to provide the nighttime visibility that drivers rely on. For producers supplying DOT contractors and pavement marking material manufacturers, bead quality is not a differentiator—it is a baseline requirement.
That is exactly the challenge one of our customers was facing. Despite maintaining solid production volumes, their sorting process was allowing too many off-spec beads to pass through. Customer complaints were beginning to increase, and they knew something had to change before it started affecting contracts.
They reached out to Profile Industries in search of a better solution. What they found was our Rotary Spiral—and the results spoke for themselves.
The Problem: Off-Spec Beads Slipping Through
Glass beads used in road striping must meet strict roundness standards. AASHTO M247 and various state DOT specifications set the benchmark. Non-round beads do not retroreflect light as effectively as they should, meaning lane markings may not perform as intended, particularly in wet or low-light conditions.
The producer’s existing sorting equipment was not keeping pace with production demands. It was slow, maintenance-intensive, and inconsistent—sometimes allowing irregular beads to pass through while rejecting acceptable product. The result was a twofold problem: quality issues reaching customers and unnecessary material loss reducing profitability.
They needed a solution that could reliably separate round beads from irregular ones, operate consistently with minimal intervention, and integrate into their existing production line without requiring a major overhaul.
The Fix: Rotary Spiral
The Rotary Spiral is purpose-built for exactly this kind of challenge. It uses a combination of centrifugal force and gravity to allow round particles to roll freely down the spiral, while non-round shapes—anything with a flat side, an irregular edge, or an elongated form—behave differently and are diverted away from the product stream. The physics are straightforward, but the results are highly precise. For glass beads, where even a slight deviation in shape can affect retroreflective performance, that level of precision is critically important.
Profile Industries worked closely with the customer’s team to integrate the unit into their existing production flow. The separator’s compact footprint made installation straightforward, and day-to-day operation requires minimal intervention, allowing the customer’s team to focus on other priorities.
What Changed: Real Results on the Production Floor
The improvement was immediate and measurable. After switching from their previous sorting system to the Rotary Spiral, the producer achieved a 21% increase in the recovery of specification-quality round beads from their production line. Here is what that meant in practice:
• Better product quality: Shipments consistently met AASHTO M247 and DOT roundness requirements. Customer complaints decreased, while confidence in the product increased.
• More usable output: The 21% improvement in sorting accuracy meant significantly less acceptable material was being mistakenly rejected. The recovered yield contributed directly to profitability.
• Higher throughput: Processing more material within the same amount of time gave the team the capacity to take on additional orders without adding equipment or labour.
• Significantly reduced downtime: Their previous system required frequent attention and repairs. The Rotary Spiral operates reliably with minimal maintenance, keeping production moving and reducing the costs associated with unplanned stoppages.
Taken together, these improvements did not simply solve a quality issue—they enhanced the overall efficiency and performance of the operation.
A Stronger Position in the Market
For this producer, the upgrade was about more than just equipment—it was about being able to stand behind its product with confidence. Consistently meeting specifications translates into stronger relationships with contractors and agencies that cannot afford to use substandard materials on public roads.
Quality issues in road striping can have real consequences. When a producer can demonstrate that its glass beads consistently meet roundness standards, that becomes a genuine competitive advantage—and the kind of trust that leads to repeat business and long-term contracts.
Profile Industries has helped producers across a wide range of industries solve separation and sorting challenges like this one. For manufacturers whose current processes are not delivering the consistency their customers expect, solutions such as the Rotary Spiral can provide significant improvements in product quality, yield, throughput, and operational efficiency.
